Straw polls are hardly reliable indicators of how a general election or a primary will go, since they are generally taken among relatively small, self-selected groups. Nonetheless, it’s interesting that Ron Paul won a small Republican straw vote in New York — apparently the first held in the state, at the Metropolitan Republican Club in NYC — Rudy Giuliani’s stomping grounds. Ron got 26, Rudy got 21, the rest got minimal numbers (6,4, etc.). Despite appearances there are probably more than 100 Republicans in New York and this wasn’t a random sample, so it isn’t much of a prediction of how the primary will turn out. It is a testament to organizing ability and troops on the ground, however.
